The animals, had long ago, decided who was fastest and bravest and most cunning amongst them. The Jade Emperor, from the steps of his palace, had provided a test in the form of a race, allotting each of the twelve animals a year, based on the order they finished.

Then, the animals that had failed to meet the race criteria formed a legion against the Jade Emperor. All the animals in the Zodiac called their kin to help in the battle against these misguided foes. As the inevitable clash grew closer, the Jade Emperor, being passivist and learned man, simply flicked his wrists and fireworks soared into the sky.
These were the first ever to be seen or heard in the cosmos, which stared at the beautiful flashes that appeared in the sky and celebrated peace.
